About French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children:

The FMIC is run through an innovative four-way partnership between the Government of Afghanistan, the Government of France, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the French NGO, La Chaîne de l’Espoir. The Aga Khan University manages FMIC on behalf of AKDN.

In 2001, La Chaine de l’Espoir proposed building a maternal and child hospital that would be a self-managed training and referral hospital, which would also play a strong role in reconstructing Afghanistan’s healthcare system. They approached the Government of Afghanistan, who donated land, and the Aga Khan Development Network, to run the hospital.

In 2006, the partnership between La Châine de L’Espoir, the Governments of France and Afghanistan and AKDN was formalised, and FMIC was officially inaugurated. The Aga Khan University became responsible for its management.

FMIC’s four founding partners continue to invest in the hospital. They remain committed to working together to chart a course towards sustainable healthcare solutions for Afghanistan.
